Aksustrike:Students lament as strike lingers
The ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities( Aksu Chapter) has led to a general outcry from students.
Soweto Media Gist Gathered that the state government are yet to reach a concrete agreement with the union.
This has led to an outcry from the Student as some of them took to social media to lament the disruption in academic activities, house rents and so on.
Here of are some their demand -
Akwa Ibom State Government, Promises Must be KEPT in the Land of Promise!
We are asking for the SECURITY OF OUR FUTURE in Akwa Ibom State, and for the utmost attention to students and staffs welfare in our only state owned University - Akwa Ibom State University, Aksu.
On the 14the Day of November, 2019, the sole head of administration had stated to Nigerian students how much he upheld good character, integrity and honor. He had urged Nigerian Students to move with the changing waves and dynamics of modern society, but today we in Akwa Ibom State University have been placed in an immovable spot by the same that promised with hopes.
We demand answers on why issues of Students' and Staffs' welfare are ignored and we are asking for proper investment in the Educational Sector of Akwa Ibom State!
Beyond the acquisition of knowledge and affordable relevant skill of benefits from the tertiary institutions, many Nigerian students have other needs to cater for. In the last three years, Nigerian Students of Akwa Ibom State University have renewed their various rents and other expenses across both campuses of the institution, but yet have not progressed academically. Nigerian students since 2019 till date have remained in one particular class for three years. The host communities of this institution do not understand what is called STRIKE, they get their wages for every service rendered to the student community.
Why has the Akwa Ibom State Government refused the payment of the outstanding 25% of AKSU's staff salary in the last 10months?
Why has the Akwa Ibom State Government paid only 75% of the salaries of AKSU's staff in the last 10 months?
Why has the Akwa Ibom State Government refused the payment of the 2019/2020 leave grants of members of staff in AKSU?
Akwa Ibom State University is known to be a credible workshop for development where students shine their light. But the recent incessant industrial strike action within the academic community in the middle of a semester's examination and the poor state of major facilities across both campuses of learning (i.e. Obio Akpa Campus, Oruk Anam LGA and Ikot Akpaden Campus, Mkpat Enin LGA) is gradually dimming her light.
Let it be clear that this is an appeal to the Akwa Ibom State Government to tackle the issue at hand with immediate effect and help us with the necessary required amenities to secure our future within the learning environment.
There will be no learning if teachers are not paid their wages, and there will be limited results and a half baked society if learning is stopped for unexplainable reasons.
Let there be no politics with our future, for we are gradually losing our own AKSU.
It's GOOD MORNING from Tehila Republic
